CHAPTER 13

On Tuesday morning, Anna took Rosie up on her offer to stop by the inn and pick up the hydrangeas that she admired the other day. The lavender flowers always looked so beautiful in a glass vase on her coffee table, so it would be well worth the trip. Plus, it gave her an excuse to check in on Rosie and see if there were any updates on the case.

As Anna exited her car, Simon was loading his suitcase into the trunk of what she assumed to be his rental car. His steps were heavy as he lifted the suitcase and tossed it into the trunk.

The funeral wasn’t for another few days. Had Simon decided not to stay?

Rosie was once again waiting for Anna in the parlor. She had already cut the flowers and had wrapped the stems in a wet paper towel to keep them fresh.

“These are beautiful,” Ann exclaimed, as she accepted the large bunch of lavender flowers. It would be enough to make two arrangements. “You could have a side business selling the flowers you grow on your property.”

Rosie waved away Anna’s idea. “I’m happy using them around the inn and giving them to family and friends to brighten their homes. Can you come in for a quick cup of coffee? I have some news.”

“I was hoping you might,” Anna said.

They walked past the kitchen, where Rosie poured coffee into two flower-patterned teacups. They each made it to their liking with the cream and sugar that Rosie placed on the counter, then sat on the wicker chairs in the sunroom.

“I noticed that Simon is leaving early,” Anna said.

“Under the circumstances, he didn’t think it would be appropriate to stay for the funeral. I guess lying to someone about being married makes for an awkward time at their funeral.”

“Why the sudden change? He was planning to attend when we spoke to him on Friday,” Anna said, slightly surprised.

“Now that word has spread that he’s married, he didn’t feel comfortable sticking around. I guess when he thought everyone believed that he and Gabby were just friends, it made more sense. But now it would be too awkward.”

“I can see that. It’s probably the right thing to do. But it is unfortunate that we won’t be able to reach him if any more questions should arise,” Anna said.

“That’s what I wanted to talk to you about. Charlie Doyle just stopped by to tell me that they cleared Simon as a suspect.”

“You’re kidding!” Anna said. “Did he give you any details?”

“Apparently, during the time of Gabby’s murder, Simon was indeed in his room alone. He was on the phone talking with his wife.”

“Let me guess,” Anna said. “He was hoping he’d be ruled out as a murder suspect without having to ask his wife to give him an alibi.”

“You guessed it. According to Charlie, Simon didn’t want his wife to know what was going on, because he couldn’t be a suspect without a motive. And his motive was that Gabby had threatened to tell his wife about their relationship.
